A bleeding and spewing On the Road…
‘No sweeteners offered. This is how it is. No relief.’ This is how it is, in Britain in 2023. Relief when it finally comes is like a panicked intake of breath. Fizzing and jerking, long haired, in crimson tassels, Hoffmann is a hand extended into the depths. Her work is a ritual, an ordeal, an exorcism of the malevolent forces of austerity, complacency, and greed.’

Touching on themes of crisis in the Anthropocene, mental health, austerity, aging and the environment; the work charts a personal journey across the UK during a series of ‘red alert’ storms, whilst falling apart.
This is a psychoactive, absurdist ride into the fragmentation of the self. A journey through breakdown Britain as Tetley tea bags pile up and scrambled eggs congeal.
It takes the audience on an initially mundane ride of bed and breakfasts, money concerns and motorway closures, until reaching a surreal & fragmented point of collapse & catharsis through transcendental shaking & elemental release.
The exhibition is an immersive installation featuring broken cars, storm simulation and a B&B dining room with free daily breakfasts.
Audiences are invited to wear Virtual Reality headsets and join us on a journey through Breakdown Britian.

In this continual survival game nearly two years ago I spilled out, fragmented. These moments of collapsing on the carpets, the laments, like a sickness, were moments of tapping into a sorrow we all carry, through layers of history and systems that don't work for us.
We all carry on functioning while the care for our most vulnerable is dismantled.
Some people can never ‘transcend’ or move into a better place. They are stuck in the same situation -precarity becomes their daily existence there is no way out and yes the storm still rages, we are in it - it wasn't just me falling apart it's all of us -
Mediating this moment through a VR headset - the anomaly of using high tech whilst experiencing a journey of displacement and struggle with no moments of winning, scoring, or resolve – instead the challenges keep coming, relentless, until finally there is only shaking.
A tremble for new possibilities. A releasing, not necessarily a resolve but a desire for re- forming nevertheless. What will shake us into a new existence?

Catherine Hoffmann’s exhibition WORMHOLE OF OUR FORMATION reflects on multiple layers of perma-crises and how our fragile bodies and minds somehow work their way through them. The 4 sequential VR films can't be conveyed in this medium but you get a taste of the installation, which includes breakfast and tea making facilities (thanks). I can't remember another woman artist who's used rusty car parts so eloquently in an installation before! Sadly, today is the last day of this iteration but I look forward to seeing what happens next with this exciting material. Blown away.

Catherine is a visionary, pushing multi-disciplinary practice to an immersive new scale. Taking relentless risks in making and in the true sense of artistic experimentation. The political message in the work is lived and not a fleeting nod to issues of mental health and poverty.
The colourful flare of Wormhole of our Formation uses rusty cars and sequinned costume with tassels and golden locks whipping into a storm with great abandon, through humour, skilful writing and character studies in photographic prints, VR headsets, installation objects and a nice cuppa tea too. An immersive, often absurd, vivid and tactile experience with the offer of a free breakfast (Shame I’d just had lunch) The VR element placing you in Catherine’s presence in various locations where she performs a variety of monologues and conversations is simply brilliant. From cancer to Welsh jacket potatoes, to the incredibly imposing shuddery trance in a very yellow windswept alleyway. The layers build and loop in a mesmerising fashion.

My introduction to the wormhole was making toast and sipping tea whilst having a chat underneath a parasol made of a car bonnet with an egg stuck to it. In that way the wormhole was an expanded immersive treat for the senses, smell, taste, touch and vision. Catherine’s attention to detail and execution were an insistent invitation to weather the storms and go on your journey.

Catherine Hoffmann (UK)
For the past twenty-five years Catherine Hoffmann has worked with performance as her main practise. Originally trained at Dartington college of Arts with a recent MA in creative writing from Birkbeck University, she is based in Folkestone.
Described as an elemental weather system Catherine takes an interdisciplinary approach to her work using text, music, choreography, video and participation - sitting in between Live art, cabaret and performance. In a DIY approach and usually with absurdism she tackles personal, autobiographical material to shine a light on social issues.
Most of her work could be seen as some kind of humiliating act, revealing aspects such as shame, guilt, poverty, loss, gynaecological and mental health. She ventures into vulnerable terrain using humour and irreverence as a tool, to open up dialogue, embracing the desire for collective healing in our challenging contemporary lives.
Mainly creating solo shows as well as interactive intimate works, she has also collaborated with artists such as Florence Peake, Lesley Ewen, Dickie Beau and Molly Haslund.
She has shown in festivals, theatres, art galleries, cabarets, on night buses, and in bars and clubs all over the UK, including at the Southbank centre, Barbican, BAC, Spill festival, The Turner contemporary and venues throughout Europe.

Wormhole of our Formation

Touching on themes of crisis in the Anthropocene, mental health, austerity, aging and the environment; the work charts a personal journey across the UK during a series of ‘red alert’ storms, whilst falling apart.
This is a psychoactive, absurdist ride into the fragmentation of the self. A journey through breakdown Britain as Tetley tea bags pile up and scrambled eggs congeal.
It takes the audience on an initially mundane ride of bed and breakfasts, money concerns and motorway closures, until reaching a surreal & fragmented point of collapse & catharsis through transcendental shaking & elemental release.
The exhibition is an immersive installation featuring broken cars, storm simulation and a B&B dining room with free daily breakfasts.
Audiences are invited to wear Virtual Reality headsets and join us on a journey through Breakdown Britian.
The work was developed with support from Screen South & Arts Council England, Wysing arts centre and Cambridge Junction.
